Skatepark project rolling along

DIDSBURY -- The Didsbury Skatepark Committee is getting a little closer to its goal of building a new skatepark on the Didsbury Memorial Complex outlying grounds.

The committee got a boost from council, which recently committed $60,000 for a professional fundraiser for the skatepark project.

Erin Enns from the committee said members were ecstatic to hear about the money.

"We're all really excited," said Enns. "We're rejuvenated in our faith in the system and we're hoping we can get this done soon. It was good news when we heard that."

Enns said they've hired Jordan Cleland, a consultant from Olds, to help them with finding donors and applying for grants.

"We're hoping to break ground next spring or summer depending on if we can get the funds rolling in," she said. "Our momentum has picked up. We're on our way to getting some bigger donors now that we know the town is helping us."

Enns said working with Cleland is a huge benefit for the group.

"He helped Olds raise all the money for their skatepark," she said. "He's helped the ball diamond raise money. He's worked with Olds College. He's a big deal for us. How many bottle drives would we have to do? He knows where to go and who to ask. He's great to have on our side."

The town previously spent $39,000 for the community engagement and design process for the skatepark as well as donating the land for the project.
