A snowfall warning remains in place Saturday for Mountain View and Red Deer counties as well as nearby urban centres.

“A long period of snowfall with significant accumulations continues,” Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 4:46 a.m. alert for the area on Nov. 23 said.

The snowfall warning covers much of central and southern Alberta.

While the eastern part of the province could see up to 35 centimetres (cm) of snow by Sunday, other parts like west-central Alberta will likely see snowfall totals of 15 to 25 cm.

The alert is in place for:

• Mountain View County near Sundre, Olds, Didsbury, Carstairs, Cremona and Water Valley.

• Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

“Heavy snow will taper off for most areas by this evening,” the alert for counties and nearby urban centres said.

The federal agency cautioned that visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.”

Snowfall warnings are issued in Alberta when 10 cm or more of snow falls within 12 hours or less.
