Town's social media presence needs improvement

CARSTAIRS - Town council and staff received a positive review from the Jordan Cleland Consulting Corp. regarding the town's social media at the regular council meeting on Oct. 9.

"Overall, he thought it was quite good," said Carl McDonnell, Carstairs CAO. "There were some recommendations in regard to reviewing who we have (links) to for other websites (on the town's website).

"If the business is the chamber of commerce or an organization in town or those types of things then we should probably have a policy for which ones we allow and which ones we don't."

Cleland also recommended having a disclaimer saying the town isn't responsible for the content of those links.

"If it's a business or the chamber and the information hasn't been updated, it's not our responsibility for that posting," he said. "As for social media, Facebook and Twitter, we need improvements. We're not using them nearly enough to get information out."

Budgets, traffic discussed

In other council news, council heard the presentation of a five-year plan and 2019 budget proposal for both the Carstairs Public Library and the Carstairs and District Historical Society, which operates the Carstairs Heritage Centre.

"None of the budgets get approved at this point," said McDonnell. "They just submitted their proposed budgets. Council thanked them for that and for all their work over the year. They both had a good summary of all the programs they ran and priorities for next year."

Council approved changes to two bylaws, the tax instalment payment plan bylaw and the tax penalty bylaw, as staff continues to update bylaws for "wordsmithing," said McDonnell.

During councillor reports, one councillor brought up concerns from a resident about how much the new Tim Hortons will increase traffic in the Scottsdale subdivision.

"Council has requested administration to monitor once the Tim Hortons does open and what the increase in traffic is," he said.
