Strong wind, rain expected in Central Alberta locales Tuesday evening

A special weather statement is in effect Tuesday for Mountain View and Red Deer counties as well as the urban centres near them.

In its afternoon update, Environment Canada said heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to begin Tuesday night in the area.

The special weather statement is in effect for:

• Red Deer County near Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

• Mountain View County near Carstairs, Cremona, Water Valley, Olds, Didsbury and Sundre.

“Showers will intensify tonight and continue through the day on Wednesday,” the alert said.

Upwards of 40 millimetres of rain is expected by Wednesday evening.

Strong northerly winds will develop early Wednesday morning, the alert said, with gusts of 80 kilometres an hour expected. Winds will weaken later Wednesday afternoon.
