Students at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools have helped raise $70,000 for emergency relief following the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines.
Students, teachers, staff and others conducted various fundraising events, including popcorn sales and bottle drives. They raised more than $36,000, with the federal government matching the funds.
First-term board chairman Guy Pelletier said the fundraiser was part of a larger effort to instil students with an appreciation of the benefits of community service.
"Social justice is an integral component of Catholic education,î said Pelletier. "They are learning that they have a special obligation to care for the poor and those in need. We believe that this is a fundamental teaching that allows our students to go out and make a difference in the world.î
Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools includes schools in Innisfail and Olds.
