CARSTAIRS - More than 200 Grade 3 and 4 students performed a song called One Dream during the Remembrance Ceremony at Hugh Sutherland School on Nov. 7.

Written by Dave and Jean Perry, the song includes the lyrics: "I have but one dream, I'd like to see a world where children can be free, a world of caring, a world where fighting and wars will cease."

The one-hour ceremony saw Cpl. Owen Tuckey, with the Royal Canadian Army 41 Combat Engineer Regiment, address students, teachers and other guests.

He called on students to remember and honour the Canadians who served during the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, Afghanistan and during peacekeeping missions.

"It is us up to us to remember their sacrifices," said Tuckey, who also paid tribute to the thousands of women who served in industry during Canada's wars.

Teachers Natalie Paulgaard and Kevin Hronek were the ceremony's MCs.

"Someone, somewhere died believing they did so for a better future," said Paulgaard. "Thousands, millions, worldwide never had a chance to grow old. We are privileged to live in a world most of them never grew up in - a world, which is more peaceful.

"By remembering the past, think about what you want to give to the future. Do not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, their lives. Peace be with you."

The ceremony also included student choir performances and Last Post performed by Riley Austin.

Wreaths of remembrance were laid by various community groups and organizations, including the RCMP, Indigenous Canadians, the Town of Carstairs, Royal Canadian Army, Air Force and Sea cadets, the Royal Canadian Legion and ladies auxiliary, Carstairs Fire Department, Carstairs protective services, Chinook's Edge School Division, family members of serving forces members, Hugh Sutherland students, teachers and staff, and others.
