Students recognized for citizenship

Mountain View County has recognized six area students for their contributions to their communities during their school years.

Mountain View County has recognized six area students for their contributions to their communities during their school years.

The Citizenship Awards program presentation was made during the June 20 policies and priorities committee meeting, with graduating students from Carstairs, Cremona, Didsbury, Olds Koinonia, Olds and Sundre receiving certificates of recognition, three in person.

Each recipient also received a $500 bursary.

“It’s wonderful to see the next generation of leaders stepping forward,” said Deputy Reeve Angela Aalbers.

  • Abigale de Rosemond is a Carstairs Hugh Sutherland School student. She has been part of  Carstairs minor baseball teams, a member of the high school golf team, a volunteer with the community police advisory committee, has helped out with the Santa’s Gone Looney program, volunteered with the Cars, Cops Kids fundraiser, and has helped deliver Christmas hampers.
  • Nicole Armstrong is a Cremona School student. She volunteers at Samaritan’s Purse workshop packing and shipping shoeboxes, has worked at the Water Valley Forest Nursery planting trees, volunteers with Alberta fisheries, volunteers at the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, and volunteers with the Big Prairie Association as a youth member.
  • Simon Kreiser is a Didsbury High School student. He has been involved with minor hockey, baseball, basketball and other athletics, has helped coach young hockey goalies, volunteers with the Didsbury Lions Club, has been part of his school leadership team, and has attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp.
  • Jared Cox is a student at Olds Koinonia Christian School. He has been a member of his school council, is involved in many basketball sporting events, has participated in the work experience program, has worked at River’s Edge Camping Association organizing games for campers and setting up events, and has been involved with the West Zion Mennonite Church as a volunteer.
  • Erika Olsen is a student at Olds High School. She is involved in the Alberta High School Rodeo Association, with 4-H, cross-county running, track and club basketball, volunteers with Meals on Wheels, spay and neuter clinics, seniors’ activities, and Mountain View Special Riding Association.
  • Cori Wilson is a student at Sundre High School. She participates in the Sundre High School band, volleyball team, students' union board and leadership club, is a member of Sundre 4-H multi club, a member of the Alberta High School Rodeo Association, volunteers with the May Queen fundraiser, Santa’s Anonymous, Go Wild Go West riders drill, and Mountain View High School Rodeos.

All six students say they plan to pursue post-secondary education.
