Two local students were given a helping hand from local synergy group Central Mountainview Advisory Group (CMAG).

The $750 scholarships went to Alexa Bricker and David Aerbersold.

"Traditionally, CMAG was a group that focused only on industry and community relations, but as we expand to include more community issues, we wanted to have a further impact within our area," said CMAG chairman Wayne Notley.

"The idea was supported by its members, and one member, Ember Resources, provided their own funds to support the initiative. CMAG also contributed from its budget."

Notley, Jason Sharkey of Ember Resources and Everett Page made up the scholarship committee, which selected and accepted applications.

"Part of our selection criteria included learning in a community-related field that could eventually bring the student back to the community to work," he said.

David Aerbersold is attending Lakeland College to study animal science technology, and Alexa Bricker is attending the University of Alberta to attain a degree in biological science.

Jason Sharkey presented the scholarships to Bricker and Aerbersold during a ceremony.

"CMAG hopes to continue with the scholarship program in 2017," said Notley, "and will keep the community informed of future plans on its website.
