Torrington history book being released

The Torrington Historical Society is pleased to announce the official unveiling of the Torrington and District History Book 1890-2015.

The Torrington Historical Society is pleased to announce the official unveiling of the Torrington and District History Book 1890-2015.

On June 25 and 26, the community of Torrington will gather to celebrate its history and to salute the people who have contributed to making the community a wonderful place to live.

“In conjunction with our history book launch we are pleased to welcome citizens of the Torrington community, past and present, to enjoy a weekend of fellowship and reminiscing,” said committee chair Dorothy Weimer.

Just like at Sports Days dating back to the 1930s, there will be a parade starting at noon on Saturday. The visiting will begin at the Ron Gorr Memorial Arena at a pancake breakfast on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 from 9 to 11 a.m., hosted by the Wildrose Party.

During the 1970s and '80s, CFCN's Buckshot was a Sports Day staple, and he will be back as parade marshall noted Weimer.

“We were pleased that Buckshot was willing to come out and help us remember why Sports Days were such incredible events,” Weimer said, adding she didn't think that Benny the Bear was going to appear.

The history book launch will start at 2 p.m. in the Ron Gorr Memorial Arena. Two commemorative books will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to marking the school sites in the area.

The committee chair added that the arena will be open for visiting, a historical exhibit with a slide/DVD show, and an evening meal will be available.

Along with the parade, which will start at noon, there will be a children's carnival at the community hall, tours of the town, and the ever-popular Gopher Hole Museum will be open and celebrating its 20th anniversary.

“As music has played an important part in the history of Torrington there will be live music in the evening from local musicians who continue their musical heritage,” said Weimer.

“At one time there were five churches in the area. For the book launch, the Trinity Lutheran Church will be holding a worship service at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the community hall. We hope that people come, visit and enjoy all that our community has to offer.”
