While road conditions on Highway 2 between Calgary and Red Deer improved since Tuesday night, a tow ban on the highway was still in place Wednesday morning between Blackfalds and Edmonton.

The province’s travel advisory service, 511 Alberta, noted in its 7:30 a.m. update that the tow ban on the roadway also known as the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, between the province’s capital city and Highway 616 remained in effect.

“Reduced visibility and slippery sections are still making extremely hazardous road conditions. Several vehicles in the ditch. Avoid travel until conditions improve,” 511 Alberta noted.

Road conditions on Highway 2 between Calgary and Red Deer were listed as bare Wednesday morning.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a blowing snow advisory Tuesday afternoon for much of central Alberta including Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

By just after 6 p.m. RCMP in central and northern Alberta advised that road conditions were extremely bad, specifically in Leduc, Wetaskiwin, Camrose County, Maskwacis, Ponoka and areas around Edmonton.

RCMP reported whiteout conditions with severe wind. Visibility was noted as being extremely poor in many locations.

“RCMP are actively responding to multiple collisions and reports of vehicle rollovers along Highway 2 between Red Deer and Leduc as a result of these weather conditions,” police said in a 6:18 p.m. press release.

By 7:30 p.m. all northbound lanes on Highway 2 east of Olds from Highway 27 to Township Road 334 were closed due to a motor vehicle collision.

The Olds Fire Department gave an update at 9:01 p.m.

“Crews have cleared the first collision and are now responding to another collision. This has resulted in traffic being stopped northbound at the Olds overpass. Please drive with caution.”

Crews were cleared from that collision by the fire department’s 10:22 p.m. update.
