DIDSBURY - Residents and visitors will not be allowed to consume cannabis in any public places or town-owned or -operated buildings in Didsbury, according to the new cannabis consumption bylaw, which was passed by councillors at the recent regular council meeting.

The background information in the bylaw states that "the town took steps to ensure its own cannabis consumption bylaws are in place and aligned with the legislation passed by upper levels of government.

The federal government gives municipalities the ability to pass bylaws to be strict or lenient in regards to consuming cannabis in public places.

In other council news, council passed a motion to update the Town of Didsbury's personnel handbook to take into account recreational cannabis legalization.

The background information provided by administration states that "the town is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace, which is free of alcohol and drug use.

"The town prohibits the use, possession, unauthorized distribution, offering or sale of drugs, alcohol or unauthorized prescribed medicine while on town business, premises or worksites, except for alcoholic beverages permitted by the town for a celebratory function or event."

Council approved the purchase of Alberta First Responder Radio Communication System equipment for the Didsbury Fire Department. The total cost of the quote for the equipment and transition is $166,705.22.

The Town of Didsbury is expected to pay half, while Mountain View County pays the other half.

"The hub system we have right now, since last spring or summer, it's been patchy," said CAO Harold Northcott. "So our firefighters are having messages that aren't coming through so we don't have much choice. Everyone in the Mountain View County, we're all in the same boat."

In other council news, Didsbury council approved the bylaw for records management, which will allow for electronic records to be addressed.
