CARSTAIRS - A head-on motor vehicle collision on Highway 2A south of Carstairs on Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of a man and woman, both from Calgary.

The collision occurred north of Twp. Rd. 293 at about 4 p.m. as a pickup truck and a car collided on the two-lane roadway, say police.

The man and the woman, who were occupants of the car, both died at the scene, RCMP Cpl. Curtis Peters told the Gazette.

Neither of the deceased persons had been named at press time Monday.

EMS spokesperson Adam Loria said no resuscitation efforts were initiated on either the man or the woman based on injuries sustained.

The male driver of the second vehicle, believed to be in his 40s, was assessed, treated and stabilized by ground paramedics at the scene.

He was then flown by STARS air ambulance to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre.

"This individual suffered numerous serious internal and external injuries, but is considered stable and in non-life threatening condition," said Loria.

There was no update available on the injured man's condition at press time Monday.

The investigation into the cause of the crash was continuing Monday with the assistance of an RCMP collision re-constructionist, said Peters.

"We haven't received our reports back from the collision analyst as of yet," said Peters. "The cause is still being investigated."

Road conditions were dry at the time of the collision, he said, noting alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Didsbury RCMP officers were among those who attended the scene.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours following the crash, with traffic diverted onto the QE II.
