Waste commission plan "very important" says deputy reeve

Mountain View County councillors received the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission's 2016-2021 business plan for information at the Dec. 9 regularly scheduled council meeting.

Mountain View County councillors received the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission's 2016-2021 business plan for information at the Dec. 9 regularly scheduled council meeting.

The MVRWMC operates one landfill, four transfer sites and seven recycling centres for 32,000 residents. The commission includes representatives from the county and towns in the county.

Mountain View County deputy reeve Patricia McKean is the county's representative on the commission. She calls the new plan a good step forward.

“It's very important,” said McKean. “When we started on the commission there was a business plan that was approved in 2010 but nothing had been done with it since then. They approved it but they didn't use it as a living document or use it on an ongoing basis.

“With our new plan we've set some key performance initiatives with dates and goals to ensure that things are getting done and stay on top of the business plan. We hope that it is one of those things that new members coming on in the future will always have something to work off of so there is constancy in the commission. I think everyone is pleased with the plan.”

According to the plan, objectives of the commission in 2016 include “to continually search for and review new innovation techniques and technology available”, “to maximize the life of the landfill”, “to remain financially sustainable and cost effective”, and “to meet or exceed all regulatory requirements placed upon the commission by government mandates.”

Also according to the plan, goals in 2016 include the following (quoted from plan):

• Recommend to the board to strike a committee to determine and propose a strategy for public engagement/communication.

• create a mechanism to capture feedback and suggestions on service improvements or deficiencies made by customers, including a tracking system to be reported to the board quarterly.

• review equipment needs, review the number of daily cover plates, promote recycling to deter from landfill.

• review all equipment requirements includes scales.

• better educate the member municipalities.

• In 2016 the landfill airspace will be limited, restricting acceptance of waste within the MV County borders. A review of accepting waste from other municipalities as a means of revenue generation will be undertaken when more information on current cell development, landfill expansion, and/or use of new technologies to reduce waste into the landfill can be adopted.
