MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - A special weather statement remained in effect Monday for Mountain View County and the urban centres near it.

Over the weekend, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an alert for the area saying the first accumulating snowfall of the season will fall today.

While the special weather statement was lifted Monday afternoon for some areas to the north of Olds, it remained in place for Mountain View County near Sundre, Olds, Didsbury, Cremona and Carstairs as of the federal agency’s Oct. 21 noon hour update.

As it stated earlier, the federal agency said the snow started along the foothills and is expected to push east across southern Alberta through the day.

Its Monday afternoon update included a forecast of how much snow may fall with some areas possibly seeing total accumulations of five to 10 centimetres before the snow ends tonight.

“Warm ground will initially cause some of the snow to melt. Snowfall accumulations will vary considerably. Rain showers are expected in some areas before precipitation changes over to snow. This may result in slippery surfaces as temperatures fall below zero. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” the special weather statement concluded.
