Wessex area structure plan back in the works

After a two-year delay, work has resumed on preparing a new Mountain View County area structure plan (ASP) for the Wessex area around Carstairs.

After a two-year delay, work has resumed on preparing a new Mountain View County area structure plan (ASP) for the Wessex area around Carstairs.

The ASP process was initiated in 2010 but suspended to allow for the passage of the county's new municipal development plan (MDP) in 2012.

Area structure plans set out land use policies regarding agriculture, residential development, neighbourhood commercial development, business park development, community recreation and other things. The plans must adhere to the MDP.

During the recent Mountain View County council meeting, councillors appointed two councillors to sit on the plan's steering committee. They are Jeremy Sayer and Patricia McKean.

The former MVG councillors on the original steering committee were Everett Page, Gwen Day and Lana Yakimchuk.

During the Jan. 22 meeting current councillors also instructed administration to contact existing committee members to determine if they want to continue sitting on the committee.

At least one of the current steering committee members has moved to B.C., so there will be a call for at least one new committee member, council heard.

There are several other ASPs now in the works in the county, including for the Highway 2-27 area and the Bergen area. New ASPs were approved for the Sundre area and Water Valley late last year.
