Mountain View County has undertaken a winter gravelling program on twelve kilometres of roads near Highway 27, a project organizers hope will reduce wear and tear on county roads.

"The intent of the program is to ensure that roads are gravelled prior to spring breakup. Gravel trucks hauling during the winter months over frozen roads, further protects the roads from damage and eliminates the problems caused by dust during the hauling,î said Dave McPhee, manager of infrastructure maintenance.

The program got underway last week and is scheduled to wrap up this week.

The overall effectiveness of the gravelling program will be known in the spring when the sites are examined, he said.

About 300 tonnes of gravel was used for every mile of the road in the program.
