Winter hits Canada with a vengeance

November and early December we were blessed with unseasonably warm weather and we even had the odd sighting of people in shorts.

That all changed around Dec. 22 when the big storm hit and a cold spell and plenty of white stuff fell down from the skies.

I was in B.C. during the holidays visiting family. Upon my return it was time to scramble and fish around for the winter gear. Where do I keep my tuque? My extra-warm mittens? My nice scarf?

I don't know if you can ever be ready for -25 but I'll tell you I wasn't. Time to get up a few minutes early and warm the car up, clean it off, shovel the sidewalk. It all takes a little extra time.

One night about a week ago I stepped out of my front door and saw a moose in the front yard. For those who live in Didsbury, a moose sighting is not that rare. But it is still shocking. I came here from Grand Forks, B.C. where we had almost as many deer as people in town. And the deer just ignore people and basically walk among them. But a moose, on the other hand, is pretty hard to ignore. This particular fellow was about my height (6 feet), and wide and all.

Lately on social media people have been talking about the town mascot. Currently, Didsbury has Didsbee, a bee that is often seen at major events such as the rodeo and the parade.

Some are thinking that perhaps a moose would be more appropriate. Or maybe a combination bee and moose. Moosebee or, as someone said, beemoosed (bemused). Oh, the possibilities are limitless.

Personally I think a bee is fine. It's nice to have any mascot come out and hand out goodies or whatever. It's all great for community spirit in 2018.
