The first significant snowfall of the season is expected over parts of the province beginning tonight, Environment Canada warns.

The agency issued a special weather statement at 4:51 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22 for the Airdrie - Cochrane - Olds – Sundre area as well as the Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail – Stettler area.

“Snow will develop over west-central Alberta tonight and move towards the east and south on Monday. Snowfall amounts will vary greatly across the province due to initially warm ground temperatures and the duration of snowfall over some regions,” the statement reads.

In central Alberta, Environment Canada says snow will begin tonight and end by Tuesday morning. It forecasts total snowfall amounts of two to five centimetres.

In southern Alberta, snow is expected to begin on Monday and end by Tuesday evening. Five to 15 centimetres of snow is expected to fall with higher amounts possible along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and in the mountain parks.

Precipitation for communities near the international border will initially fall as rain and will transition to snow Tuesday night.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” the agency advises.
