Young competitors getting great rodeo experience

Young competitors are gaining great and valuable experience competing in Mountain View Cowpoke Junior Rodeo events this fall and winter, says rodeo co-organizer Patricia McKean.

“They are definitely learning,” said McKean. “We can see the progression as they are getting ready for spring. We are getting lots of volunteers stepping up.”

Mountain View Cowpoke Junior Rodeo club held its third rodeo of the season at the Raecer Ranching Riding Arena east of Sundre on Jan. 30.

The daylong event featured participants up to 14 years of age competing in goat tying, goat untying, pole bending, steer riding, breakaway roping and barrel racing. There were 78 competitors who took part.

Ellie Havens, 10, had a 13.62 time to win the six and under goat tail untying event. Messina McConnell, 9, finished second and Bristie Kugler, 8, finished third.

Ryden Hillock won the seven and under goat tying event with a 32.84 time. Noah Kelly, 9, finished second with a 37.65 time.

Casey Cyrankiewicz, 10, won the seven and under pole bending event, with Erika Webb, 9, finishing second and Ellie Havens, 8, finishing third.

Jayce Richard and Carter Sahli tied for first in the steer riding event with 70 scores. Tyler Craig finished second and Brandon Sahli finished third.

Kyla Kelly won the 12-14 breakaway roping event, with Kaidence Lashmore finishing second and Denton Argent finishing third.

Cayden Cyrankiewicz won the 11 and under breakaway roping event.

Reagan Tebb won the 8-11 goat tying event, with Jayce McKean finishing second and Presley Chaytors finishing third.

Kyla Kelly won the 12-14 goat tying event, with Logan Bender finishing second and Amanda Harder finishing third.

Reagan Tebb won the 8-11 barrel racing event, with Kennedy Chaytors finishing second and Cora Croteau finishing third.

Alex Kerds won the 12-14 barrel racing event, with Cati McArthur finishing second and Amanda Harder finishing third.

“We have added a rodeo for May 14 as some of our participants are competing in the Alberta Junior High Rodeo in Taber on April 16, and we wanted to ensure that we had as many of the kids as possible at our finals and awards,” said McKean.

The next junior rodeo at the Raecer Ranching Riding Arena is scheduled for Feb. 27 starting at 10 a.m.
