Youth flying day a hit

More than 50 young people from across the district took part in the annual Olds-Didsbury Flying Association Flight 142 COPA for Kids event on June 2.

More than 50 young people from across the district took part in the annual Olds-Didsbury Flying Association Flight 142 COPA for Kids event on June 2.

Held at the Olds-Didsbury Airport, the day-long affair gave the youngsters a chance to experience the joys of flying first-hand.

“We had a very successful day and the weather was great,” said club member Ed Shaw. “We were happy with the numbers that came out and how it all turned out. It was all good.”

Five volunteer pilots who are members of the flying association, took the kids up on flights of about 20 minutes each. Another 10 volunteers also helped out on the ground.

Ranging in age from eight to 17, the kids were not officially permitted to control the aircraft during the flights, but all got great bird's-eye views of the surrounding countryside.

COPA is the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association.

Another COPA for Kids event will be held at the airport in 2019, he said.
