OLDS — Grizzlys goaltender Aidan Fischer has been named the Alberta Ford Dealers Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Defensive Player of the Week.
The 2005-born goaltender posted a 2-0 record and a shutout Sept. 25 and 26 during the AJHL Showcase in his first two games with the hockey club.
Fischer made 38 saves and recorded a shutout in his first AJHL game in a 5-0 win over the AJHL’s newest franchise, the Devon Xtreme.
For those exploits he was named the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game.
The next day, Fischer stopped 20 of 21 shots to lead the Grizzlys to a 6-1 win over the Bonnyville Pontiacs and end the week with a .983 save percentage.
The Grizzlys acquired Fisher from the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) a couple of weeks ago.
The Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week is Calgary Canucks Captain Bowden Singleton.
Singleton led the league in scoring last week with four goals and five points in two games played during the showcase.
On Sept. 25, Singleton (born in 2004) opened the scoring for the Canucks with two goals in a 5-4 win over the Pontiacs.
He was recognized as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game for his three-point (two goals, one assist) night.
The third-year Canuck scored another two goals in the final game of the showcase on Sept. 27 as the Canucks shut out the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 8-0.
Singleton is on a four-game point streak since the start of the season, having racked up eight points (five goals, three assists).
Singleton’s teammate Carter Cunningham is the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week following a five-point (one goal, four assists) performance in the Canucks’ two victories.
The 2006-born forward from Lethbridge recorded an assist against the Pontiacs then scored his first AJHL goal and added three assists versus the Oil Barons.
