Area residents medal at National 55 Plus Games

More than 2,790 participants took part in various sports during the Games held in Kamloops this year

Two area residents won silver and bronze medals during the National 55 Plus Games, and a third placed fifth in his event. 

Les Markham of Carstairs won a silver medal in horseshoes. Helen Jorgensen of Olds won a bronze medal in five-pin bowling and Bill Clancy came in fifth in five-pin bowling during the games, held Aug. 23-26 in Kamloops, B.C. 

Clancy was surprised to receive another honour: at 94, he was the oldest male participant in the Games. The oldest female participant, 91, came from the Yukon. 

More than 2,790 participants took part in various sports and more than 600 volunteers were on hand to run the Games.   

In two years, the Canada 55 Plus Games will be held in Quebec.
