The Olds Athletics are still looking for their first victory of the season after dropping a pair of games against the Carstairs Cubs and Red Deer Razorbacks last week in Parkland Baseball League play. The A's lost 9-2 to the Cubs on June 12 while they lost 15-5 in Red Deer on Friday.
The losses leave the Athletics with a 0-3 record.
The Athletics picked up eight hits on June 12 in the team's home-opener, while also collecting six bases-on-balls against Cubs' pitcher Brad Regher. Cody Edwards went the distance for the Athletics, striking out five.
On Friday in Red Deer, Mark Smyth got the nod for the Athletics, going four innings before Craig Gans finished up on the mound, pitching the last three innings.
Jeremy Tookey, the team's spokesperson, said both teams had their struggles defensively, with the Athletics giving up six unearned runs and the Razorbacks giving up four.
Tookey said part of the reason for the slow start is due to the fact that four of the team's games thus far have been rained out and they have only been able to practice four times since the early part of May. Like the A's, the Rocky Red Dogs have only played three games as well, while the Eckville Angels have managed to get in 10 games so far this season.
“In my mind, it's definitely a reason why we're off to a slow start. We've got a busy next couple weeks; we play five games in two weeks so hopefully we can get this turned around and put (some wins together),” he said.
The A's were to begin that busy schedule with a game tonight against the team they are chasing to get out of the south division cellar, the Irricana Canadians, at O.R. Hedges Park.
