The Sundre Curling Club recently hosted a dozen teams that came to play in the annual seniors' bonspiel.

Compared with the past few years, that was an average turnout, said Rob Lang, a volunteer who helps out wherever he can.

Seven of the teams were from Sundre, with another two coming from Cremona as well as one team each from Water Valley, Olds and Innisfail, which was enough for three events. The first curlers hit the ice on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and the finals were played on Friday, Dec. 7.

Winning the A event was the Nels Brian rink from Cremona, while the Jim Thomson team from Olds won the B event. Taking the top spot in the C event final was the Ian Cook rink from Innisfail, said organizers.

“It was good. We didn’t win, but it was good,” Lang said with a chuckle, adding one does not necessarily have to win to have fun.

Marlene Cardon, an event organizer, said everything went really well, and expressed her appreciation for all of the visiting rinks that registered to participate and help make possible the event.

The seniors' league is going well so far this season, albeit a bit low on numbers with eight teams, said Lang.

However, with some folks who plan to soon head south, that will affect things a bit, he added.

The doors always remain open for potential new recruits who might be interested in getting involved, he said.

“Just come and enjoy yourself,” he said, encouraging any potential fence-sitters out there to give the sport a shot.

“Have some fun while getting some exercise!”
