The Olds Stingers Bantam lacrosse team is tied for first in its league and they're looking forward to playing in Provincials in Calgary July 10-14.

The Stingers proved just how good they are when they won gold in the Spirit of the Sticks tournament, held May 31-June 2 in Innisfail, coming from behind to down the Lakeland Heat 12-10 in the final.

The Stingers got off to a strong start in the round robin, beating the Lacoka Locos 7-5 on Friday afternoon.

On Saturday morning, they got by the Lakeland Heat 9-7, then hammered the Calgary Axemen 14-1 that night.

By Sunday morning, the Stingers found themselves in the gold medal final.

"It was a very intense, nail-biting game," Bantam Stingers manager Gina Belcastro said in an email. "It was 9-4 in the second period and the Olds Stingers came back and scored seven goals in the third period."

"Our team played hard all weekend," she added. "Way to go, Olds Stingers Bantam team."

Belcastro expressed her gratitude to bantam coaches and parents for their help and support as well as to organizers for hosting a great tournament.
