Big golf tourneys should spur economy

Olds Golf Course pro manager Wade Bearchell says upcoming tournaments – especially two in particular – should help spur the town's economy.

Olds Golf Course pro manager Wade Bearchell says upcoming tournaments – especially two in particular – should help spur the town's economy.

The course's tournament season, so to speak, begins in June with the Alberta Amateur Qualifier on June 9, followed by the Olds Farmers golf tournament on June 10 and the annual Rotary Club fundraising tournament on June 17.

“Those are three big events that we have right out of the chute in June,” Bearchell says.

But the biggest one on the schedule this year is the Alberta Senior Ladies Championship, which the Olds Golf Course will be hosting Aug. 10-12.

“That's a premier event in Alberta and we're very proud to be hosting that,” Bearchell says.

On behalf of Olds College, the club is also hosting the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) Regionals Sept. 16-18.

He's anticipating that about 100 women will participate in the Senior Ladies Championship and he figures about 75 golfers will participate in the ACAC Regionals.

“Certainly they drive (up revenue at) restaurants and hotels and gas stations so it's nice to have them,” says Bearchell, who is also a town councillor.

“We're proud to help out Alberta Golf and have these events and showcase our golf course and our community. So it's a win-win.”
