Soccer players in Bowden are gearing up for another season.

The Bowden Minor Soccer Association held its Annual General Meeting and registration night on March 9 at Bowden Grandview School.

“Every year we have our AGM and go over our past year, talk about our plans for the coming year, gather our registrations and get the new season started as well,” said Karen Fagan, president of the association. “We're hoping to get new board members this year.”

Bowden minor soccer has been a part of the community for more than 20 years she noted, and every spring sees a good number of children enjoy the sport.

“It's been very successful over the years. We average about 80 kids (a season) but we have had well over 100 some years,” she added. “We generally have everyone from U-6 (under age six) to U-18 (under age 18) players and because we're a small association we tend to have one team per level,” explained Fagan.

Bowden plays in the Big Country Soccer League and during the regular season competes against teams from Olds, Three Hills, Hanna, Didsbury, Crossfield and Carstairs.

Teams with Bowden Soccer are co-ed, noted Fagan, adding the regular season begins around mid-April.

“The coaches are lined up by then, our teams are set up and the kids get practising,” she said. “Hopefully the weather co-operates and by mid-April they start practising.”

Older teams begin games between the middle and end of April, with the younger squads starting between the end of April and the beginning of May.

“They practise in town (at Grandview School and at the U-10 field by the arena) then go to their various places for games,” said Fagan. “It's a busy soccer season but it's a lot of fun.”
