OLDS — The École Olds High School JV Boys basketball team is really starting to gel, and that bodes well as they prepare for yet another hectic series of games to round out the month.
The Spartans’ next home game is Jan. 28 versus Sundre. Then they play in a tournament Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
The boys have been busy since the new year began.
They’ve played two official league games and won both, then battled in two tournaments the last couple of weekends.
Last weekend, they finished in fourth place out of 10 teams. The weekend before, in Drumheller, they finished in fifth place among nine teams “after some really tight games,” head coach Natasha Lester says.
“The boys had a total of nine games in 11 days, and between injuries and illness, most of those games (we) only had eight players healthy enough to play,” Lester wrote in an email.
“As coaches, we were really happy to see, despite a tough schedule, that they pushed themselves right to the end of that stretch.
“For a lot of our players, it's their first time playing together, so now that we are a bit farther into the season, we are really starting to see them gel and work together as a team, which has been awesome. This has been reflected in our game play on both offence and defence.”
