OLDS — Tuesday night’s game at the Olds Sportsplex was a humbling one for the Grizzlys, to say the least, as they suffered a 9-2 hammering at the claws of the Canmore Eagles.
The Eagles came out flying, scoring seven straight goals in the first period alone.
Grizzlys goaltender Connor Johnson came in for starter Ben Dardis at the 9:20 mark of the first frame after stopping nine of 13 shots.
The Eagles scored two more in the second period before the Grizzlys finally got on the scoreboard.
At 15:41 of that period, Jonathan Doucette scored his ninth goal of the season on the powerplay, assisted by Johnny Maruna and Lucas Schaefer.
And just before the end of the second period, Michael Albert got his second goal of the season at the 19:27 mark, assisted by Aidyn Law.
There was no scoring in the third period.
In total, the Eagles fired 50 shots during the game, compared to 19 by the Grizzlys. Johnson stopped 32 of 37 shots he faced.
On a positive note, the Grizzlys were 50 per cent with the man advantage (one for two opportunities). The Eagles were two for five on the powerplay.
The Grizzlys’ next action is this Friday, Jan. 31 when they host the Lloydminster Bobcats at the Sportsplex. Game time is 7 p.m.
