Reg Carrick, who led the Olds College women's varsity basketball team to a bronze medal in the national Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship in March, will be returning to helm the team in September.
Following the team's triumphant return to Olds after the national tournament, Carrick announced that he was stepping down as a coach to focus more on his job as an athletic supervisor at the college.
The change of heart, he said on May 6, was due to the college offering him the opportunity to focus exclusively on coaching and recruiting, opportunities that only the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and MacEwan University offer in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
“Basketball became my day job, which is an amazing commitment on the school's part to athletics. I feel really honoured to be the first full-time coach at Olds,” he said.
Carrick said his appointment as a full-time coach will serve as a “test case” for possibly making more coaches at the college full-time.
“There's pressure. We have to do well, not only to continue what we started, but also to bring those other sports along,” he said.
