CARSTAIRS — A Carstairs youth is playing in two national lacrosse championships this month.
Blair Bosomworth, 15 will be playing in a national box lacrosse championship Aug. 17-20 in Toronto as a member of the U17 junior Roughnecks.
Then, roughly 10 days later, he'll be in Prince Edward Island to participate in the men's U17 national field lacrosse championships which run Sept. 1-3.
Bosomworth has been playing lacrosse for nine years, since he was six years old and plays with the junior Roughnecks program out of Calgary.
He plays midfield and attack.
Bosomworth started out playing box lacrosse but switched to field lacrosse three or four years ago.
He prefers field lacrosse.
“I get more chances to score,” he said during an interview with the Albertan. “The nets are bigger and it’s a bigger field.”
Bosomworth made team Alberta after tryouts were held in mid June.
He admits the competition there was “pretty tough.”
“I thought I was one of the top players, but then I wasn’t sure,” he said.
But as time went on, he figured he had a pretty good chance.
“I just had the ball lots and I was moving the ball a lot,” he said.
Like all players, Bosomworth has strengths and weaknesses.
He figures his strengths are his speed and his “stick skills” -- his ability to work with the ball and lacrosse stick to create offence.
He says his weaknesses are the accuracy of his shots and his defensive skills.
Bosomworth has been working on those liabilities by practising at home.
“Every day,” his mom Melanie says.
Bosomworth figures the toughest squads team Alberta will go up against will be team Ontario and team B.C.
They’re always “really good,” he said. "Strong defence will be key."
