The Spartans defensive unit stifled Winston Churchill High School for the opening half, but a sputtering offence couldn't keep up with the Bulldogs as Olds High School's football team lost its first game of the season 22-3 on Sept. 16 at Normie Kwong Park.

Olds High School held a 3-2 lead after the first half, preserved by a valiant defensive stand in the final two minutes. With the Bulldogs inside the red zone, the Spartans sacked the Churchill quarterback, forced an incomplete pass and blocked the field goal attempt.

"Defence was amazing in the first half. They were the reason we were even in it to begin with," said offensive lineman Chase Molitor.

Head coach George Grant said he has a young team this year that still needs to improve in all aspects of the game. But for now, they're relying on keeping opponents off the scoreboard.

"We'll definitely lean on them a bit more until our offence and special teams start clicking," he said.

Molitor took responsibility for the offence, saying they have to be better on running plays.

"Our passing game out of shotgun was great but we need to work on better runs. We didn't have one successful running play," he said.
