OLDS — The dream ended a bit early for the Olds U13 Spitfires baseball team – and in dramatic fashion.
They lost 7-6 to the B.C. 2 squad in the quarterfinals of the National Western Championship tournament, held Aug. 19-21 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
Head coach Jason Jaffray says they lost in extra innings on a “walk-off squeeze bunt.”
It was an up and down journey to that point.
The Spitfires doubled up on Saskatchewan 1 with an 8-4 win, lost 7-4 to Manitoba 1, were edged 14-13 by B.C.1, then suffered the loss to B.C. 2 in extra innings.
Jaffray is proud of the team, especially given the fact that AAA-level U13 team had never existed before in town and was only created this spring.
“Our team won the infield skills competition for the entire tournament. We finished as a top five or six team in Western Canada. Amazing accomplishment for a first-year AAA team,” he wrote in an email.
