Olds College female soccer player Katharina Oeltermann has received two honours already and the season has just begun.

She was named Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) female athlete of the week and the Olds College Broncos A & W female athlete of the week.

Abu Bangura was named the college's male athlete of the week.

Female athlete of the week

Oeltermann was not only named OC athlete of the week but also has stepped up her game on and off the field for the 2019 soccer season. She is the captain of the women's team and led them to a great six-point opening weekend to the 2019-20 season.

As a centre back for the team, the sports management student was a key piece in starting the new season with a dominant 4-0 clean sheet win. The Hanover, Germany native was dominant in and out of possession and showed great leadership throughout the game.

On Sunday, the women's team faced a SAIT team that finished last season with a perfect 12-0 regular season. Katharina opened the scoring with a free kick from long range which surprised the SAIT goalkeeper.

The Broncos went on to battle to win the game 2-1. Katharina led the team from the first minute and made several key plays on the offensive as well as defensive sides of the game. She made several key tackles and blocks to ensure the Broncos' win, and was named the player of the game.

Male athlete of the week

Bangura showed substantial growth from last season and put together a dominant performance on the weekend.

Involved in many key defensive plays while also creating offensive chances, the Calgary native was selected as the Player of the Game vs. Ambrose Friday night. He shut down the Ambrose offence and was consistently involved in the Broncos' attack.

The Broncos were unable to connect the dots during the SAIT game but there were some strong individual efforts across the field. Abu, a sports management student, played a consistent game against a very tough opponent and once again was involved in key defensive and offensive plays throughout the game.

Overall Abu put together a very solid opening weekend.
