The new Olds Stingers coach is hoping to do what he couldn't as a player in junior B lacrosse: win provincials.

Last year was Laine Foshaug's last year of eligibility with the Stingers, where the team finished with silver for the second straight season, losing to the Olds Mavericks.

He said the coach of the team, Gary Gaudette, wanted to help coach those Mavericks, who moved up to Tier II in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League this year. Gaudette offered him the position.

Foshaug accepted, saying he wanted to give back to the sport that introduced him to great people, taught him leadership skills and allowed him to do it close to home.

Seven games into his first coaching gig, the Stingers are 4-3 in the RMLL's junior B Tier III division. They're in second place out of four teams.

The High River Heat are in first and have run away with nearly every game they've played through their 10-0 start to the season. The Stingers almost pulled off the upset when they hosted their fourth matchup this year on June 3, but lost 8-6 – the closest anybody has come all year.

With 15 players on his roster, Foshaug oversees the smallest team out of the four. He said keeping his players fresh has been a challenge.

He's also continuing to master the art of the locker room speech.

"I'm getting there," he said. "I say a few words and then they take it into their own hands to get pumped up before they hit the floor."

The Stingers' next home game is on June 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Olds Sportsplex.
