FunSkate in Olds draws athletes from across central Alberta

It was a full day of figure skating competition, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

OLDS — About 135 skaters from 26 figure skating clubs across central Alberta descended on the Sportsplex for the Olds Figure Skating Club’s (OFSC) Winter Wonderland Fun Skate competition.

The event, a Fun Skate for kids in Can Skate up to Star Skate 3, featured two judging panels and medals were presented.

Seventeen OFSC skaters participated. The youngest skaters competed in the morning and the older ones in higher levels of the sport displayed their talents in the afternoon.

"All of them did a great job and had a fun experience," an OFSC email to the Albertan said. "A Fun Skate is an event designed to let skaters showcase their skills in a fun and supportive environment. It’s organized for beginners and intermediate skaters who may not yet be ready for high-level competitions," the email said.

"The focus is on participation and personal improvement rather than strict competition. Skaters usually perform short routines that highlight basic skating skills, spins, jumps, or creative choreography.

"A Fun Skate is a great way for skaters to gain confidence, practise performing in front of an audience, and without the pressure of competing. The judges are there to evaluate each skaters skills and elements of their performance and each participant is awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal."
