OLDS — Throwing athlete Natalie Harrison has had a “stellar” summer, coach Rachel Andres says.

Last month, Harrison took first place in discus, second in shot put and third in the hammer throw during provincials and third in shot put during the Western Canada Team Challenge.

Unfortunately, the competition at the Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field National Championships, held Aug. 9-11 in Calgary, provided to be too tough, as it featured the best athletes from across the country.

“In absolutely stacked fields she took seventh in discus, seventh in shot with yet another personal best (PB),” Andres wrote in an email.

“She had to PB in order to make finals and PB’d getting into finals and again on her sixth throw with an 11.19-metre (toss).

“Her final event, hammer, she PB’d by five full metres, throwing 39.49m. She got 10th and only missed out on finals by 20 centimetres.”

During the Western Canada Team Challenge, held July 19-24, representing Team Alberta, Harrison placed third in shot put, fourth in disc, and second in the hammer throw, nearly tying her new PB with a 34.22m toss.

During provincials July 12-14, Harrison finished first in discus with a new PB of 29.52m, second in shot put, and third in hammer throw with a PB of 34.70m.

Local throwing athletes have three meets remaining: Aug. 31, Sept. 14, and Sept. 28, all in Calgary.
