OLDS — École Olds High School (ÉOHS) athlete Kepler Fitzner has had a fantastic summer in track and field.
According to his dad, Gibb, Fitzner obtained four medals during the 2023 Alberta Summer Games held July 20-23 in Okotoks and Diamond Valley.
During the Games, competing in the U16 age group, Kepler finished second in the 800 and 1,200 metre (m) events. He also finished third in the 300 m and third as well in the medley team relay.
Before that, he won the U16 men’s 800 m event during the provincials July 9 in Sherwood Park.
Kepler is out of town until late August. Gibb was asked where he believes his son got his track and field talents from.
“None of his immediate family competed in track. He has just shown a natural interest and ability in the sport and is a very motivated person,” Gibb wrote in an email.
He noted that Kepler has been a speed swimmer for several years.
Kepler decided to compete in triathlons and has done well, finishing in the top five in the Woody’s triathlon in Red Deer.
He’s also a member of the ÉOHS cross country team.
“He joined the Red Deer Titans track club this spring and has improved a lot since joining,” Gibb wrote.
