The 20th annual Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum golf fundraiser will be hosted in Innisfail Aug. 9.
This isn't the first time the organization has chosen Innisfail as the host location. In fact, this will be year 12 in Innisfail.
“We used to rotate around,” said Donna Hateley, managing director for the hall of fame and museum. “We just found the course is absolutely incredible. And we have people that come from Edmonton and Calgary and it seems to be a key highlight to golf in Innisfail.”
Between $35,000 and $40,000 is typically raised during the annual tournament with all proceeds going directly back to showcasing and preserving Alberta's sports heritage, she explained.
“This year we're doing a sport history research project. We're putting together information on the history of sports in Alberta. That will be put onto a special website for research,” said Hatelely, who hopes to launch the site in the fall.
She said it will be useful to students or anybody who wants to know the history of any particular sport.
“There will be photos and links to other places. People will be able to write in their own stories about whatever their grandfather told them about historic facts on sports in Alberta,” she said as an example. There will be a bibliography of books as well as articles written by students.
There are 40 spots available left for the tournament that maxes out at 144 competitors. For more information, phone 403-341-8614.
