OLDS — Olds College rodeo coach Guy Kelley is confident his team will do well during the final rodeo of the season in Rimbey next month and the finals, which will be held May 19-21 in Brooks.
“I think right now in the standings we are number 1 in the saddle bronc, number 1 in the tie-down, number 1 in the team roping, number 1 in steer wrestling, Kelley said during an interview.
In addition, he said, they have other team members who are in the top 10 in their categories, including goat-tying, breakaway roping, team roping and pole bending.
"We won quite a few firsts and lots of placings. Our team overall has been really strong,” Kelley said. "We’re having a really good year.”
So far this spring, the Broncos have competed in rodeos in Taber, Vermilion, and in their home rodeo, held March 19-20 in the Brawn Family Arena at Olds College.
That home rodeo attracted competitors from seven other colleges and clubs throughout B.C., Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Following are the results from the rodeo at Olds College.
Saturday results:
Denton Dunham - 1st in tie-down
Cody Albertson - 1st in bronc riding
Cassidy Maffenbeier - 1st in goat tying
Cassidy Maffenbeier - 6th in breakaway roping
Garret Cullum - 2nd in steer wrestling
Isaak Kehoe and Cade James - 4th in team roping
Kassidy Butler - 9th in barrels
Sunday results:
Denton Dunham - 1st in tie-down
Denton Dunham - 1st in team roping
Garret Cullum - 1st in steer wrestling
Cassidy Maffenbeier - 3rd in goats
Cassidy Maffenbeier - 6th in Breakaway roping
The final rodeo of the spring before the CCRA finals is the Rimbey rodeo, which will be held April 23-24.
Last fall, in addition to their fall home rodeo, the Broncos competed in rodeos at Lakeland College and Fort MacLeod.
“It’s just nice to be back” now that COVID restrictions have been lifted, Kelley said.
His team's performance this spring gives Kelley confidence as the CCRA finals in Brooks loom.
“We’re expecting to bring home some championships, for sure,” he said.
