Janz receives MVP award

Sundre's own Tayler Janz was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) during the Alberta Shooting Stars senior all-star basketball game held in Calgary last month.

The annual Shooting Stars Showcase was held March 29 and March 30 at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), where top basketball players from across the province participated in games.

She was also named a high scorer, scoring 13 points in the game.

"It's just a good time for some of the best players to get together and play some basketball," said Janz.

She is proud of receiving the MVP award for her team.

"I think it's awesome. It's kind of like a reassurance about all the hard work I've put into everything I've done," she said.

At age 18, she is currently attending Grade 12 at Sundre High School. She enjoys playing for the SHS basketball team, with her father Kent Janz as her coach.

She has been playing basketball for as long as she can remember and started because it was a hobby of her fathers.

"My dad has just always kind of taught me the skills for it," she said. "He coached a bunch of teams and he was on a college team when I was really young, so I would just kind of hang out with him, I would go to some of his practices."

She enjoys playing other sports as well, but basketball is her favourite.

"It's fun and it's something I'm good at too."

She played in the showcase last year as well, and has won a few other MVP awards. One thing she is proud of is having received recognition from other coaches after games.

Her goal is to play in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

"It's a good college level and it would be enough to challenge me."
