This year's South Central Zone track and field championship could not have gone better for Olds High School's Laura Klinck, who finished first in every event she competed in.

Klinck, 16, finished first among all female athletes with 40 individual points.

Her four events were: the Intermediate girls 100-metre dash, 200-m dash, long jump and triple jump.

"I ended up (setting a personal best) in long jump. I was pretty happy about that," Klinck said. "I was pretty happy about how it went."

Klinck was well prepared, as she has been training year-round with the Calgary Warriors track club.

"My coach from Calgary is giving me lots of things to do, weights, workouts on my own. So I've been doing a six-day training week," she said.

From the boys, Grade 12 student Thomas Rosenberger finished first in the senior boys javelin and second in the discus throw.

He was also a surprise enlistment on the senior boys four-by-400-metre relay team, which had one member absent. The team finished sixth.

Rosenberger had been working with the track team's throwing coach Rachel Andres to perfect his technique.

"It's how to run and transfer your weight properly so you throw farther. Basically, not just using your arm," he said.

Olds High School finished fourth out of 3A schools at the meet with 141 team points.

In addition to Klinck and Rosenberger, the Spartans will send a few others to the provincial championship in Edmonton this week: Jansie Nel placed first in senior girls pole vault; Alan Klinck, second in intermediate boys 400-metre dash; Dawson Green, first in intermediate boys pole vault; and Baylen Unger, first in senior boys pole vault.

Several other athletes won ribbons as well for finishing in the Top 4: Brooklyn Kardos, Intermediate, fourth place in 800-metre run; Nolan Moody, Junior, third place in javelin throw; Andreas Troschke, Intermediate, third place in discus throw.
