The recent annual Sundre Curling Club’s Ladies’ Bonspiel saw an increased number of rinks competing compared to last year.

“We had 20 teams total,” said Sharon Olsen, the ladies’ league coordinator, adding there were about 17 that participated in 2018 and that organizers were pleased with the turnout for the Feb. 8-10 event.

While most of the teams were local, five came from out of town — one from Olds, another from Caroline, as well as three from the Cremona and Cochrane areas, said Olsen.

“We get a lot of good support from Cremona; they come to a lot of our events,” she said.

This year’s winners were as follows: A event — Deana Jensen rink from Cremona who defeated the Suzanne Comfort rink from Sundre; B event — Samantha Speight rink from Sundre who won against the Darlene Kapiczowski rink from Sundre; and the C event — Renee Gibson rink from Sundre who beat the Christie Johnson rink from Caroline.

“It went really well — everybody had a great time I think,” said Olsen early last week.

She said there was no shortage of support from the community that contributed invaluably towards making the annual bonspiel possible.

“We have lots of donators.”

All of the teams who play in the ladies' league, which includes a larger group that plays Wednesday afternoons as well as another that curls on Thursday evenings, also brought some door prizes. There were 35 in all while volunteers were available to offer safe rides home, she said.

“The whole town is super good. Without the sponsors, we probably wouldn’t be doing this event. It’s a big thing for a small community,” she said, adding every helping hand also plays an important part.

“It’s everybody that’s involved who makes it run smoothly,” she said.

“The people in this community do an outstanding job.”

The ladies’ league has so far this year been doing fairly well, with about 15 rinks involved between both the Wednesday and Thursday groups, she said.

With the annual bonspiel wrapped up, the ladies' league will be winding down for the season in March. The last regularly scheduled games are set for Feb. 27 and March 6, followed by some playoff rounds, she said.

Meanwhile, the club’s annual one-day open mixed doubles bonspiel takes place Saturday, Feb. 23, she said.
