Ladies golf night a success

Lady golfers are taking over the Innisfail Golf Club on Tuesday nights.

“Our Tuesday Ladies Night is growing,” said Jim Boomer, the club's head professional. “Depending on the weather, we can have as many as 90 golfers on an evening, which is very amazing. Tonight we have somewhere around 70.”

He noted the beautiful weather had drawn a good crowd but not as good as the previous week, which was a member-guest night which hosted 120 ladies.

“Every Tuesday night we not only have the ladies come out for nine holes of golf, but we also give a golf clinic at 5:30 p.m.,” said Boomer. “Tonight we talked about three elements of a good swing: tempo, balance and tension. Other nights we teach on posture, follow-through and foot positioning. There is a different lesson every week.”

Innisfail golfers Joanne Oxtoby and Amanda Gazdewich are enjoying the Tuesday Ladies Night.

“I just love this course,” said Oxtoby. “There are three different nine-hole courses with beautiful greens that are well regarded by the golfing community. For me, this is just another night of golf as I try to come out three times a week.”

Gazdewich added she thinks $35 for an evening of golf, a lesson, a golf cart and a meal is a cheap evening out.

“This is my first year as a golfer in the Tuesday night ladies league,” said Gazdewich. “I am really enjoying golfing with the ladies. For me, it is so close to home too.”

While some ladies take the evening seriously, golfers Heather Ebert and Trista Lorenz usually don't even keep score.

“Most nights we just go out to play, and keeping score just takes the fun out of the game for me,” said Ebert. “I only keep score when I have a good hole, which is not too often.”

She added that Tuesday night golf is a great social event for her and that she gets a chance to meet many people of different ages, and when she golfs in a foursome.
