Local residents as well as current and former Olds Broncos athletes did well in a badminton tournament held March 23 in the Ralph Klein Centre.

Olds college head badminton coach Mary Smith who helped organize the event was one of the athletes who did well.

She won the women's singles event, the women's doubles event with Alana Stefanick, and finished in third place in mixed A with Keelan Stefanick.

"It was definitely exhausting playing against 20-year-olds," Smith said. I was very excited to win in singles as well as doubles because of the fierce competition."

Alan Dougan, who went to Olds College in the 1950s, and his daughter Kaitlyn Dougan took first place  in mixed B.

Layce Donaldson and partner Kevin Spicer finished second in Mixed B. Donaldson played for the Broncos a couple of years ago.

Christian Persson and Ray Smith, an Ecole Deer Meadow School student and his grandfather, placed third in men's doubles C.

Current Broncos Luther Jurke and Connor Long finished second in men's doubles B.

Former Didsbury resident Kevin Spicer and Alan Dougan placed first in men's doubles C.

Layce Donaldson and Kaitlyn Dougan finished third in women's doubles.

Competitors came from across the province.

Smith says the tournament was a big success, attracting 20 more athletes than last year.

"I had many remarks commenting how well the tournament was run. (They were)  hoping I would do another this season," Smith wrote in an email. "A competitor's mother from Edmonton said it was the best tournament her daughter has been in, 'very smooth and fair.'"
