The 2014 Alberta Winter Games wrapped up on Feb. 9 with Olds athletes coming back with two medals.
Zone 2, which includes Olds, struck gold in girls’ hockey. Representing Olds on the team were Paige Grenier, 14, and 13-year-old Alayna Wagstaff.
Paige said her team played Zone 5 in the championship game and won the match 4-0.
Competing for gold in the final was a "surreal" experience, she added.
"It’s just because it went by so fast and you normally think of gold medal games to be close and it was," Paige said. "We had a 1-0 lead heading into the third but then we just pulled away with it."
As for what she took away from the games, Paige said she learned the importance of savouring an experience.
"Stay in the moment because these are memories you will want to remember."
Also competing for Zone 2, Rachelle Fullerton-Lee, 14, won a bronze medal in team wrestling competition.
Individual wrestling scores were tallied up for a cumulative score for each respective zone.
Fullerton-Lee finished fourth in individual competition.
Austin Mitchell, 14, an Olds wrestler competing for Zone 7, finished eighth after his three individual matches.
The two wrestlers were facing more experienced competition and represented Olds with great sportsmanship, wrote Rachelle's mother Rhonda in an email.
They should be proud of themselves, she continued.
Zone 2 finished first in the medal count, with 108.
Forty of those were gold, 31 silver and 37 bronze.
In second place was Zone 3, with 94 medals.
