Rural Olds resident Zachary Latimer won the gold medal in the 77 kilogram (kg) body weight class and was named best overall male lifter during the Peak Power Open Weightlifting competition March 3 in Calgary.
Latimer finished with successful lifts of 112 kg (247.5 pounds) in the snatch, and 138 kg (305 pounds) in the clean and jerk competition, for a combined total of 250 kg (552.5 pounds).
He obtained a Sinclair coefficient rating of 315.65. The Sinclair coefficient is a way of comparing people in different weight classes.
Latimer went a perfect six for six in his competition lifts, increasing his total by 15 kg from results in a previous contest in January.
Latimer, 18, a junior lifter for another two years, "was still able to out-lift all his senior competitors," a news release says.
The Peak Power Open Weightlifting competition attracted about 60 of Alberta's top male and female weightlifters.
Latimer usually trains at his family's farm just outside Olds. He's also a member of Farm Strong Athletics, a weightlifting club in Edmonton.
He is coached by his dad, Bryan Latimer, as well as former Canadian weightlifting champion Brent Garrett of Edmonton.
