A Bowden bareback rider was nudged out of competing for the big bucks at this year’s Calgary Stampede.

During the Wild Card Saturday Qualification on July 13, Ky Marshall earned 87 points, as did fellow competitors Colin Adams and Mason Clement.

But Clement’s go-round win the night before enabled his 87 mark on the Saturday on Witless Margie to be enough for the last qualifying bareback spot for the championship.

All three riders got $4,000 each for their Saturday rides.

Marshall kicked off the 2019 Calgary Stampede bareback competition with an 86 on Free Shipping on Friday, July 5.

On Make Believe a day later, he earned 80 points. He bettered that ride by three points the following night atop Agent Lynx.

And on a horse called Oney, he scored 84.50 on his final ride before the wild card qualifications.

As of July 18, Marshall was sitting in seventh place in the Canadian Professional Rodeo standings for bareback, having earned $11,240.58 for his efforts thus far on the circuit.
