CARSTAIRS - The recent 2019 Carstairs mixed doubles bonspiel saw a new type of curling game come to the Carstairs Community Curling Club.

In all, 20 teams came out and competed over two days. The format featured a team of one male and one female with each team throwing five rocks with one rock pre-positioned in the house.

The overall event winners were Michelle Down and Tim Jochems, who beat the team of Emily Plett and Duane Brown in the A final.

The B event winners were Kim Tribble and Charlie Van Arnam who defeated Tami Barnes and Victor Lowry. The C final saw Rebekah Frisk and Isaac Bedard beat Peggy Grochmal and Mike Savard, while the D event winners were Lee-Ann Comrie and Moe Groves who defeated Shelly and Craig Vatcher.

"It's a relatively new event to curling and became popular during the Olympics so we thought we would give it a try and host an event in Carstairs," said Kerry Meyers, who organized the event along with his wife Chelsie.

"Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the new format as it is more fast-paced with quicker games. The competition had some experienced players but also some new curlers. The competition had curlers aged 13 up to a couple in their 70s."

The next bonspiel at the Carstairs rink is the ladies bonspiel, which goes Jan. 25-27.
