OLDS — Olds College Athletics has a new logo for all its Broncos teams.
That logo was revealed Aug. 28 and presented via a news release issued by the college the following day.
The new logo, developed by Olds College’s marketing and communications department, features a white horse's head leaning forward with a fierce expression. Its mane is blue and there’s a green base at the bottom.
The name Olds College is in green and the team name: Broncos, is larger and in blue.
The college says the design is “an homage to the Indigenous cultures whose land Olds College occupies and as a connection to myth and legend where they are used as symbols of strength and courage.
“The wordmark uses the same typeface as the Olds College logo, but with a heavier weight and italicized style to create the impression of movement and sport. Some characters are sliced and angular to create a fierceness and sense of motion,” the news release says.
The new blue and green colour scheme is a departure from the crimson, gold and black scheme which had been in place for more than a decade.
The change was made, in part, to align with the overall brand of Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, launched in 2022.
"As we unveil the rebranded Olds College Broncos, we are honouring our deep-rooted history of sport in our community and campus, as well as setting the stage for an exciting future,” Olds College senior manager of athletics and wellness Trina Radcliffe said in the release.
“We strive for excellence in everything we do in the classroom, in the community and in our athletics.”
She added that by wearing jerseys with the new logo, this year’s student-athletes “will have the opportunity to make a bold statement with an incredible spirit that is represented in our new brand.”
Dillon Andrus-Dobbs, the college’s registrar and director of student services echoed that thought.
"With our rebranding, we are celebrating the rich history of the Olds College Broncos while anticipating an exciting future,” he said in the news release.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to honouring our storied past while positioning ourselves for new achievements. We look forward to this new chapter, which blends tradition with renewed energy and ambition."
Fans will get their first look at the new-look Broncos in action on Saturday, Sept. 21 as the Broncos soccer teams will play the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and Kings in their home openers at Richardson Pioneer Field, just east of the college and École Olds High School.
Opening kickoff for the women’s match is set for noon, followed by the men’s match at 2 p.m.
